Emoji Ornaments

Taking a break from food to share a fun clay craft.  This post is about how to make ornaments emulating emoji faces. Ornaments can be used for a Christmas tree, as gift toppers, and as charms or key chains. Mainly they are super fun to make.  We made them several years ago and we still get a kick out of unwrapping the ornament box where we have them stored seasonally.

What surprises me is how emojis don’t go out of fashion.  The big yellow face shapes expressing silly, funny, sad, surprised, and hysterical emotions are still used in daily communications.  In a few more years these cute symbols may become obsolete, replaced by talking, animated, high-tech versions.  For now, we will keep making our simply funny faces.

The first couple of years after we made emoji ornaments we dedicated a separate tree to showcase them.  It was a small, shiny white artificial tree.  These days we incorporate emojis and mix them right into our main tree.

Can you find the photo ornament in the upper left-hand corner?  Ava was about 4 years old, wearing a swim cap, with a face painted like a Dalmatian, half washed off from swimming.  Now that’s classic!

Call me simple but emojis crack me up!  I instantly smile when I see one.

Emojis appeal to all ages.  In our family the grandmas down to the grandkids use them.

One of my 8-year-old twin nieces chose to have an emoji-themed birthday party this year proving that emojis are still in style.

Supply notes:

You can find Sculpey (oven bake polymer clay) from a local craft store like Michaels or order some online.  Paint pens can easily be found in a crafting store like Michaels.

I'm looking forward to crafting ornaments with Ava.  Leyla will be home in about a week.  We'll set a few aside for her to design.  I can think of at least 5 faces of emojis I use that I will be turning into emoji ornaments this year.
